Readers Ask: How To Add Comment Subscriptions on Blogger

Today I'm excited to bring you the very first question from the Code it Pretty Ask box. I'm even including the answer, you lucky readers you!

Today's question comes from Ferly from Gifts We Use.

Ferly asks:

My question pertains to email notifications for comments on Blogger. Because I explore lots of new blogs and comment here and there as I feel led, I don't always know when someone replies to my comment. And I will rarely remember to go back and check to see if there is a reply. In my exploration, I came across a blog that had a check box to notify me via email of any follow-up comments from my original comment. Can I add that to my blog so readers who comment will know when I've replied?

Marie answers:

Blogspot does have a "subscribe by email" comment feature that allows anyone signed into their Google account to subscribe to post comments. It looks like you may have found this feature, since it is enabled on your blog. But, for any readers that haven't found it, here's how to turn it on:

  • In Blogger, go to Settings > Posts and Comments.
  • Select "Embedded" from the "Comment Location" dropdown menu.
  • Save your settings.

This setting enables a comment subscription option for Google users on your blog. The link looks like this:

That's great for Google users, but what if you want to let all of your readers subscribe to comments, whether they're Googlers or not? Good news, you can use Disqus comments on your Blogspot blog! Disqus commenting offers email notifications to any commenter with no registration or special account required.

Disqus has detailed instructions for adding Disqus to a Blogspot blog on their site. You can even import your existing Blogger comments into Disqus so no comments get left behind when you change over!

Thanks for your question Ferly! Hope that helps :)
